Battle of Iwo Jima (1945)

During the Mexican-American War, Marines stormed Chapultepec Castle, which earned them the nickname "Leathernecks" and secured the line "From the Halls of Montezuma" in the Marines’ Hymn.


Battle of Derna (1805)
Part of the First Barbary War, this was the first recorded U.S. military land action on foreign soil. Marines played a key role in capturing the city of Derna, inspiring the line "To the shores of Tripoli" in the Marines’ Hymn.
Tun Tavern (1775)
It's considered the birthplace of the United States Marine Corps, where the first Marines were recruited in 1775. The tavern was also a meeting place for the Continental Congress.
